"Provecho": In Mexico, Strangers Wish You a Good Meal

By David Feldt November 4, 2026
Mexican culture Mexican Spanish Why Mexico Smiles

"México es que un desconocido te diga 'provecho' al pasar por tu mesa."

When a stranger says 'enjoy your meal' as they walk past your table.

Someone walks past your table on their way out of the restaurant. They glance over and say "provecho."

You've never seen them before. You'll never see them again.

It took me a while to stop being startled by it. It took longer to start doing it myself.

Three syllables, and what they really say is: I see you, and I hope this is good.

Eating is never completely private in Mexico. Even strangers sit at your table, a little.
